Why Dogs Need Exercise

Pet parents know their dog needs exercise, but daily exercise does more than just strengthen the body and contribute to physical health. It has a myriad of other benefits of which most individuals aren’t aware.

Socialization

Canines are naturally social creatures, but to ensure they develop socially, they need to be exposed to a variety of situations. It helps them gain confidence and learn to trust their human. Socialization is a process. Dogs should be exposed to new things gradually and in an age-appropriate manner. Exposing puppies to situations for which they’re not ready can cause irreparable harm and result in lifelong issues that are difficult to correct.

Behavioral Problems

Dogs that don’t get enough exercise are prone to a variety of behavioral problems ranging from barking and chewing to digging and excessive grooming. They can also become aggressive and unsafe to be around people or other animals.

Mental Stimulation

Imagine being confined in the same space with nothing to do and only being allowed an hour per day – or less – to see the outside world. People that have quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic should be well-acquainted with the boredom and frustration that generates. Without sufficient exercise, that’s what it’s like for a canine 365 days a year. Dogs need mental stimulation as much as people do.

Calming Influence

Exercise has a calming influence on dogs, just as it does on humans. An extra benefit is that a nightly walk before bedtime helps dogs fall asleep faster, sleep deeper, and more restfully.

Health

Regular exercise strengthens muscles and bones, keeps joints limber, and aids in regulating weight. It can also help extend their lives by boosting their immune system, making them better able to stave off illness. It’s important for pet parents to consult with their veterinarian to determine how much exercise their canine needs. Some breeds require more exercise than others, requirements will change as a dog ages, and senior dogs have special needs.
