What to Look for When Buying a Dog

When most people visit a breeder to purchase a canine, it’s going to be a puppy. It’s an exciting time, but there are some basic things that everyone should know, observe and look for when selecting a new puppy that will be a valued member of the family.

The Puppy

The puppy should be alert, friendly, curious and unafraid. Be careful not to mistake sleepiness for being lethargic. He/she should have experienced a level of early socialization and not shy away from being touched.

Check to see that there’s no discharge from eyes or nose. It’s a good idea to test their hearing by clicking your fingers or clapping your hands when they’re looking away to make sure they’re hearing is good and to see how they react to the sound. You can do a rudimentary test on their vision by waving a hand a small distance away to see if the motion attracts their attention.

The ears of all pups should be clean and free of odors or discharge. The litter shouldn’t be too thin or overweight. The mother should also be well-fed and in good health, with no discharge from eyes, nos or ears. The coats of mother and pups should be clean and shiny.

The Environment

It’s easy to just focus on the prospect of a new puppy, but pay attention to the environment and surroundings. They should be clean and well-maintained. The mother should have room to move around and space to take care of her personal business.

Be Cautious

There are a number of reputable breeders, but there are also those who are unscrupulous and breed only in the hope of making a quick dollar. Irresponsible breeding has resulted in a number of problems for unsuspecting buyers. It can result in pups that are blind, deaf, develop serious health conditions, and are bad tempered.
