Fun Games to Play with Your Dog This Summer

Summer is a great time to be outside, get some exercise, and play some games with your canine. There are any number of activities that will keep your dog entertained and provide quality bonding time. However, there are some things to consider when playing in very hot or humid conditions. In temperatures of 80° F or more, play time should be limited to short sessions. It’s important to remember that hot pavement can burn a dog’s feet.

Keep in mind that summer in South Florida comes with high heat, humidity, and the potential for heat exhaustion and stroke for you and your dog. Be careful not to play too long and keep your dog hydrated.

Water Games

Water-based games are a great way to have fun and beat the heat. Some dogs like to play in sprinklers or retrieve items tossed in a body of water, even a kiddie pool, while others like to swim.

Tug of War

This is a classic game in which many dogs will eagerly participate. Just remember to call a halt if your canine gets too excited or begins to become overheated. Be sure to let them “win” sometimes.

Fetch

This is another timeless game that many dogs thoroughly enjoy. Just throw the item a shorter distance and limit the play time to prevent overheating.

Stop and Stay

Roughly equivalent to the red light-green light game that humans play, it reinforces the stop, stay and come commands. It aids in burning physical and mental energy.

Hide and Seek

Cold treats are just as welcome to canines as they are humans. Play a game of hide and seek using cold treats instead of toys. Keep the treats cold, not frozen. This is a game that can be played outside or indoors. You might also want to consider buying your canine friend an ice cream when playtime at the doggy park is over.
