4 Ways to Help with Pet Sitter Safety

No matter how easy going your dog is, your canine can easily perceive your dog sitter as an intruder. Reports of dog sitters being attached by the very canines they’ve been hired to care for have made headlines. It’s up to pet parents to take every precaution to ensure the safety of their pet sitter and their canine.

More Than 1 Visit

Most pet parents think a single meet and greet is sufficient between their dog and the pet sitter. A single introduction isn’t enough for a dog to accept someone as “belonging” in the home. Have the pet sitter come to the house several times. Plan ahead so dogs and pet sitters have ample time to interact beforehand.

Familiar Territory

The majority of pet parents choose a pet sitter to keep canines in familiar surroundings. That may not always be the best solution. Some dogs are less likely to bite if they don’t feel they’re protecting their home.

Keep Multiple Dogs Crated

If one canine decides to attack, chances are they all will. If at all possible, crate each dog separately to minimize the potential of a mass attack. It’s much easier to handle a single dog than to be confronted with multiple canines that are running loose.

Be Honest

Let the pet sitter know if your dog has ever demonstrated aggression toward a human. Note anything that stresses the dog and how they react, along with any behaviors that might warn of an attack.

It’s Only a Matter of Time

No matter how careful or experienced a pet sitter is, it’s only a matter of time before they sustain a bite. You don’t want your dog to be the one that inflicts that injury. It will be more difficult to get a sitter in the future, it can raise your homeowner’s insurance rates, and lead to orders for your precious pet to be euthanized.
