Many people that suffer from allergies, respiratory conditions and even cardiovascular disease are turning to portable air filtration systems for their home – commonly known as air purifiers or air sanitizers. Some individuals employ them throughout the house, while others have one only in their bedroom. Air that’s filtered and cleaned actually helps people get a more restful night’s sleep and it’s healthy for the entire body.
The pollutant levels in homes are often 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor levels, according to the EPA, and include those from cooking, smoking and forest fires, cleaning products, nearby manufacturing operations, pollen, and pet dander. There’s also pollution from building materials, mold and dust mites. Even if you live in the country, your air quality isn’t as good as you may think.
Selecting an air purifier for your home is going to be a much more difficult endeavor than deciding to get one. There are dozens of models with multiple options. Some utilize high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that will need to be replaced periodically. The effectiveness of your air purifier will depend on your diligence in keeping filters changed. Some air purifiers include a UV light to iridate bacteria, fungi and viruses.
Air purifiers are typically designed to remove particles as small as 0.3 microns as the industry standard. For an idea of the size, people can see dust motes and debris that are 25 microns. Particles in the 0.3 to 0.9 range pose the greatest risk to human health. Bear in mind that heavier particles sink to the floor and air purifiers only trap lighter weight particles floating in the air.
An air purifier will typically indicate the size of the room for which it’s most effective. It’s important that you understand that the most expensive air purifier isn’t necessarily the best for your needs. You’ll have to decide for yourself how much you want to spend on the unit and the brand with which you feel most comfortable.
