Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds
Dogs rank No. 1 as the most popular pets in the U.S. and while many people want a dog, they’re reluctant to adopt because they demonstrate allergy symptoms when around a canine. According to the American Kennel Club, approximately 10 percent of the population is allergic to dog hair and dander.
There are a number of breeds that are touted as being hypoallergenic, but the truth is that no canine is 100 percent non-allergenic. However, there are dogs that are less allergenic than others.
American Hairless Terrier
Lively, intelligent and friendly, they do well with children and don’t require extra long walks. They enjoy indoor playtime, but precautions will need to be taken to prevent them from getting sunburned. They’ll also require regular baths and nail trimming.
Bedlington Terrier
They’re gentle and have a wooly coat that’s been likened to lamb’s wool. They don’t need intense exercise and do well with regular indoor playtime.
Bichon Frise
The breed is unique in that their hair doesn’t shed, but keeps on growing. That makes regular grooming essential. They’re happy and gentle dogs that are playful and enjoy activity.
Chinese Crested
They shed very little and do best in homes with gentle children. It’s a small breed that thrives on human companionship.
Giant Schnauzer
A very large breed, they’re highly intelligent and trainable and shed very little at a time. There are also smaller schnauzer versions with the same attributes. They’re all outgoing and need regular brushing.
Maltese
The small breed has long, silky hair that needs daily brushing or mats form. They’re brave and playful.
Poodle
Available in standard, miniature and toy breeds, they’re highly intelligent. They’re also active, need daily exercise, and their coat requires professional grooming.
Wire Fox Terrier
Smart and independent, they’re very energetic and will need to expend that energy with walks that are regular and perhaps longer than usual. They shed very little and when their rough, wiry coat is kept short, it requires little maintenance.
